Abstract:
Concealable stigmatized identities induce hesitancy in disclosure, often increasing social isolation and stress. Online health communities (OHCs) offer individuals the opportunity to gradually reveal themselves in a supportive environment through self-disclosure. Current research primarily investigates information consumption and contribution behaviors in OHCs through a rational perspective, while providing limited attention to self-disclosure as a coping strategy and its resulting enhancement of well-being. This study extends the OHC literature by elucidating the relationship between self-disclosure and well-being and by proposing design strategies to better address the needs of affected individuals.
